This crown of Queen Maria II arrived yesterday. The portrait bears some resemblance to the young head portrait on the crown of her contemporary Queen Victoria. These are the seller's photos. Not sure what the mintage was for the 1844.

Queen Maria II was a real beauty! Hopefully the 1000 reis will exceed your expectations, t360.
Inordinately fascinated by bits of metal with strange markings and figures

You are seeing correctly on that english influence in the portrait. The die opener, Borja Freire, was sent to London in 1836 to learn with William Wyon, who had done William IV sovereigns, and would do the earlier Victoria portraits.

The 1844 1000 reis mintage has been missing in the catalogs I have. My copy of AG has a note unique for 1842 but also a mintage of 1515. Which does not make sense. Perhaps that number is the mintage for the next year they were struck, 1844.

Mintage may have been low because latter a smaller and more convenient to carry 1000 reis coin in gold was done.

Beware there are Chinese or so I heard fakes of many portuguese nineteenth century silver coins. Well struck ones, someone created new dies.
I do not know if this type has fakes or have a coin of the type to compare to the photo. It is a general warning.

She was 13 at the time the portrait for the note was taken.

@jecz79 Thank you for the background on Borja Freire! I'll see if I can find a Chinese fake for comparison and study.

@hfjacinto Beautiful note and portrait of the Queen. I know you are passionate collector of Portuguese coins.

Nice coin but the photos are too bright to see the surfaces.
