Hi.Got myself another half eagle. This is a more common date. Seems in better condition than the one I had, to replace that one. I had that one graded, came MS61.

But I am having second thoughts on settling on this one. Because of the obverse. There is a noticeable dent a in front of the top arrowhead. And a dent in the rim over the N. The surface between the D and the left wing, and under the lower arrow, has some friction.

I am putting two photos of the coin. Sunlight and artificial light from the left side.

I still think it is better than the 1878S one but thought of asking opinions here.

I've always it found it pretty hard to find liberty series gold without those sort of imperfections, at least without paying a significant premium for the grade.

That reverse is gorgeous.

Pics aren't the best. Perhaps MS-63?

I had a bigger photo. After cutting a bit it fits under 300k. In this one the spot with lost brightness under the left wing is not visible. But the same under the arrow points can be noticed. Very superficial wear in those spots but is is enough to be noticeable against the light. It breaks the mirror-like look seen in the rest.

I liked the detail of the wings, do not see wear there. The dent in the rim does not put me off. It is just those portions of the flat field in the reverse that are not as nice.

If the half eagles are harder to find in good condition than the double eagles then I am thinking should be content with this one. The fields are still much better than the other I had.

It is true I see fewer of these that are very nice. The $5 coins spent more time circulating, less in bank vaults?

I'm guessing MS-62, though MS63 isn't out of the question. It's a great coin I'd be happy to own.

i doubt anything we see here would details the coin. however I see what you are saying about the rev right field area. gold is its own animal when grading. I don't think anything here would drop it to a 62 so I'm with coinfrog. MS63

Thank you all. I think I should be happy with this one as type coin :) God ones of these smaller coins are not so common here, I was lucky.
