It's rare that I'll buy a coin sight unseen, but in this case it was a trusted dealer offering a highly graded Half Cent as an add-on to another purchase. I was disappointed upon delivery, not only because the coin was askew in the holder. Thankfully I really didn't overpay, and the reverse is particularly nice. How would you grade her? I'll venture AU-50, understand why the obverse is disappoiniting.

Mid-AU. Is the coin askew or are the dies not aligned correctly (rotated)?
I don't see the disappointment so interested in the OP views.

Looks like an AU-53. A good coin. I am actively looking for half a cent. I never thought it would be so difficult to find a suitable 1/2 cent, early cents are quite difficult.

I'd go with AU52-ish. Nice.

I don't see higher than AU-50 with all the obverse marks.

Panzaldi: It was a modest disappointment because I didn't quite agree with the grade (will reveal a little later) --- too much marking on the obverse -- and the coin is also in the holder at an odd angle. Not a huge deal. It's a nice enough coin and the price wasn't entirely unreasonable.

i can see the disappointment regarding the coin shift. as for the grade not sure how it beaned at that grade though. I guess it was close enough for them. that angle would kill me every time I looked at it.

Lay a dish towell on counter hold slab and gently tap tap tap on each end until you find the sweet spot where coin actually rotates. It works, have done this to coins in ANACS, PCGS, NGC slabs. 2 coins I fiddled with wouldn't budge so its not always effective. I've cracked enough coins out of all 4 TPG's to surmise that tapping gently isn't going to break crack or chip these holders. On this coin...whats there to not love about it? Looks properly graded to me and choice for grade.

I've had good luck with both PCGS and NGC holdered coins using the tapping approach as described to gradually rotate the coin. Doesn't work 100% of the time, but usually it does. Of course, the PCGS "rattlers" are the easiest to do this with! What aggravates me more is when a coin looks unevenly set in one of the old thick NGC holders. In other words, when looking at the front of the holder, one edge of the coin is closer to the front of the holder than the opposite edge. I've never had any success in trying to correct that. Regarding your Half Cent, I like it for the grade. But, I am picky enough about eye appeal I have never bought a coin sight-unseen other than mint products and some common high-grade modern issues.

I think I would have passed by this coin because of its large angle of rotation. I am a perfectionist and I don't like when slab has damage even minor. But the coin is freely pleasant.
