I'm searching a bunch of 1942s and found many S mint marks, a couple of inverted. But the S on this one is larger and seems mishappen to me compared with the other Ss I see. Attached is a picture of the funny S which seems inverted and a picture of what the other S marks look like. They are smaller and located a little differently.
Any info on this is appreciated

to the CCF Not sure there is an inverted 42. Only one I see is 45. This mm is damaged by the same hit on the N and E. MM back then were hand punched so there were a lot of different placements.

I don't think that's the root cause of the mismatch.

1942 Mercury dimes in San Francisco had two different mint mark styles. The second one was MMS-005 Straight Serif, demonstrated by his bottom "good" coin. The serifs are clearly notched on both the top and bottom.

The first style was MMS-004 Trumpet Tail. I believe that describes the coin in question here. The trumpet tail has a bulbous bottom termination tail, and a hooked top termination. It is flat along the top, with no notch for a serif.

Additionally, I think that trumpet tail S took a circulation hit or some flattening, and is slightly deformed. But even if both coins were pristine, their mint marks wouldn't match. They are examples of the two separate—and completely valid—mint mark punches for a 1942 San Francisco dime.

MMS-004 Trumpet Tail on my 1941-S Large-S Jefferson nickel FS-501:

Thank you all.
To Cujohn - The only inverted S I see on PCGS is the 1942 S FS-501 inverted Mint Mark https://www.pcgs.com/coinfacts/coin...01-fb/511114

PCGS does not accredit the 1945-S 10c Inverted Mint Mark (IMM). They do accredit the micro-S and S/Horizontal-S FS-503 varieties for 1945-S 10c. The 1945-S 10c MMS-006 Ball Serif style IMM can be viewed on Wexler's reference site (second listing):

The 1942-S IMM FS-501 has the style of the MMS-005 Straight Serif mint mark. For anyone interested, that happens to be the first of the two listings on the linked Wexler article. It can, however, be better seen on the PCGS page linked by Steve, which has two very clear examples at high resolution.
