New member, 1st post with an interesting one. Received a quarter as change in 2005. Socked it away and forgot about it. Significantly toned, almost looks copper. Looks a bit fat compared to similar year quarters, but don't have an accurate thickness measurement right now. Heavy 6.09 grams. Any thoughts or ideas?

@awe, first welcome to CCF. Second, very often that surface discoloration comes from being buried. Lastly, your quarter seems to be a bit on the heavy side. I believe that mint spec is 5.67 g +/- .227 g (5.443 g to 5.897 g). The planchet for this quarter might have been a bit thicker than normal.

It does look like a "dug coin" but also could have been plated in a home laboratory—might account for the added mass.
