I am hoping to learn more about Seated Liberty coins and grading pieces from this strange chapter in USA numismatic history. This one is currently for sale on eBay--it is not my coin. This 1853 half dollar, with arrows and rays, is in a PCGS straight graded holder. When I look at the pictures, I see very little die clashing (as cool as it is), but what looks like some pitting--I am wondering if you guys think this should be a details coin. If so, or if not, which grade would YOU give it? Am I overrreacting to the surface issues?

Don't see pitting, but see a lot of small nicks. I'll say AU-55.

Original surfaces, a few too many dings for me to go higher than AU-55. I can see a friendly TPG calling it MS-60.

No 'pits'; they are small dings, not enough to be a 'details' coin. Tiny flat areas on Lib's boobs, indicates wear, long since patinated over. AU-55.

Not a fan of all the marks on the left upper half of the obverse.

If this is the pitting you're talking about I think it's die rust and would not detail the coin. Seems like MS62-63 to my eyes.

There is little rub enough to warrant at least an AU-58 slider. Hardly any wear. It looks like most of the obverse luster is missing. This coin has been meesed with.

Thanks so much for your opinions everyone--this one is way overpriced, and from the consensus of your grading, it seems even overgraded. MS(61) is what PCGS called it.

Keep it in the slab because PCGS' opinion is more respected than mine. But I would have bought it for less than MS-61 money. That means I would not have bought it sold in the slab. I think that at least, PCGS have seen all of the minor nicks and scratches under the patina Not matter what an attitude may be, it is a nice coin, anyway.

MS-61 with this type simply means it is a problem and ugly uncirculated coin. Looks to be exactly that!
