Hi everyone. I was looking through my change today and saw this. Maybe it is nothing but it looked odd to me. There appears to be a line on the wing on the back. Is this an error?

to CCF,it's a great place to be .I am no expert but I am going to say that it's either a die crack or a die clash, neither of which is an error

Well I have to dis-agree with MorgansRmine. The reason I do is that the raised area is inside the deeper part of the die. (The highest point on the coin-lowest part of the die) When a Die clash happens the dies close without a planchet between them making the outside edges of the die (The fields) to touch. When the field touch together that isn't a problem. But where the outlines of the deeper part of the fields hit each other, the outline is transfered to the opposite die. Coins after the clash would have the clash marking on them till they are polished off. The deeper parts of the dies do not touch. So a mark on the wing could not be made by a die clash. Something that happens during a clash is a crack may form on the opposite die. I feel this is a crack that is widening with material crumbling away from the die. Thus the mark is raised in that area. This continunes and get worse as the die continues to age/crack deeper/chip away till the die is deemed of no further use and retired. That is what I see.

Aaaw Coop, I'm disappointed, usually you come to a confrontation well armed. While I agree with your post, I have seen the occasional clash in the incuse areas of a coin. Most notably on the Lincoln Cent where the bay area shows up under the ear and neck area. I will admit I'm using my Morgan clash chart, a quarter, and probably inaccurate measurements. So... how about one of those famous die clash images.

It is possible to get clash marks down in the devices, but when it happens there will almost always be incredibly heavy clashmarks in the fields as well. I think the line is probably caused by adie gouge or dent.

Yep, a overlay would really be helpful. I see what looks like a clash mark left by Washington's throat also on the eagles right wing
