I do not like to put people down but when you see stupidy - it has to be pointed out. I was looking for an item on ebayI was out bid - normal occurance I did not want to pay more that my bid which was a dollar less than the buy it now price on the same item from the same seller. Get ready---- The item is now going for US $10.50 more than the same item listed just below the auction from the same seller.- with 2 hours remaining In fact the seller has multiple auctions for the same item at the same starting or buy it now price. price Some are buy it now others are standard auctions.. Please tell me when the shipping and payment options are exactly the same- -WHY would any one bid more than what they would have to pay on buy it now.? Explainations and other idiot stories welcome! rggoodie aka Richard "catch em doing something right"

Yes I have seen that many times as well.
If it happens to me, and I want the coin, I quickly hit the buy it now button so that I get it.

It's not at all uncommon to see an item sold for not only more than it's worth, but way past the price it could have been obtained earlier through a Buy It Now option. I recently sold a high-quality ham radio microphone (used, albeit still in near mint condition) on ebay for several dollars over its current purchase price brand new, complete with warranty from a commercial vendor. Several bidders had gotten into a bidding frenzy and couldn't stop themselves. I was fully prepared to forgive the top bidder if he indicated "buyer's remorse" and offer it as a second-chance sale, but the winner promptly paid up via PayPal and I shipped the next day. He was happy, I was happy, so it was a very successful transaction. I guess it's all a matter of expectations. And maybe a little illogical, yet esoteric fun is also packed into the bidding process and purchase price. Adrenaline can be addictive. Fred

I had a whole bunch of Michael Jordan bronze coins. They were very nicely done with a nice case and all. I put 10 in our ebay store at $15.00 BIN. Then I would start an auction every few days starting at $9.95. In each auction I put a great big link right above the photos that went straight to a BIN listing... Don't want to wait? Buy it now for $15.00 in our store!Same shipping, same identical item. Several auctions went to $18-$19. Oh well.

Don't laugh, it can happen to any of us.....I was afflicted with the blonde syndrome yesterday evening and bought two 50 cents coins on ebay for $35.75 when I could have bought them for $4.95 each from a Perth Coin Dealer if I had looked around.

I have seen it and probally have been one of those bidders.
Not with a buy it now auction, but bidding over actual price, just because I didn't want to be outbid!

I believe I have the winner... Recently I sold an item on ebay through a friend of mine with a sellers account. The starting bid was $10.00 and the BIN price was $15. A buyer purchased it using the buy it now, only to send a message asking if he could retract his bid, he wanted to to bid instead of BIN. Being the nice guy that I am I said no problem. The auction ended 5 days later with the same buyer spending over $30 on the item, not including shipping. He sent me a message with his paypal that said... "Shouldn't have let me retract my BIN" Cheers Mark

I don't think it's stupidity (or stupidily or stupidicity or idioty or idiotsy - I'm also a master of mispelling in many languages) as much as a loss of control. Many very intelligent persons knowingly bid on ebay and at live auctions merely for the thrill of it. Cost of the item or even winning the auction is less important than the adrenaline rush. I suppose in no small sense it might be considered a disease if it's done to the extreme, much like gambling. My father had a tendency to attend auctions and bid, sometimes outrageously on some of the most interesting junque I ever saw (duplicates and triplicates of antique tools like spokeshavers and sawtooth spreaders [I still have one]). My mother put a stop to my father's auctioning long ago, but I see a little of it in myself: I love auctions and the adrenaline rush as the auction nears the end. With ebay, I get it both ways as both a buyer and a seller. Maybe I'm a candidate for Auctions Anonymous? (Is there such a thing?)

In my opinion to many bid on ebay and do not pay any attention to the Buy it Now items especially in ebay Stores. I guess it is because they would have to scroll to the end of auctions to our listings and that is a bit of work. Other sellers are starting auction prices at near Buy it Now prices just to get better positioning and bidders are not paying attention. Which brings me to another point. You can not pay full attention when you are chasing after auctions. I know from my own mistakes of not reading every word in every listing I am bidding on. Myself personally I am getting tired of getting burned buy auctions listings and am planning on only buying from coin dealers (*See forum I started on buying on ebay). I have received numerous coins lately with scratches, dings, cracks and cleaned, and I do mean cleaned. Like with a wire brush or something. What is wrong with people?

I hate to say it, but there just as many dishonest brick-and-mortar dealers as ebay sellers. No matter where you buy, you have to watch out for yourself through education and experience. While seeing the coin in hand is a big help, it does not mean that the dealer is not trying to pass off an altered or dipped coin without disclosing this info. The key is to find sellers/dealers that you are happy with and stick with them.
