I've had coins from Cilian Armenia on my list for quite some time, and picked up this neat AE coin called a tank. Cilician Armenia was a kingdom located along the Southeastern costal region of modern Turkey. I was expecting a small coin, but it is relatively large at about 30 mm.

Cilician--Armenia-Tank

Cilician Armenia, Levon I, 1198-1219 AD. AE tank
O: Leonine head of king, Armenian legend, "Levon king of the Armenians".
R: Patriarchal cross, Armenian legend, "Struck in the city of Sis"
30 mm, 7.7 g.

I always thought the bust was strange on these, but you know how wacky medieval art can be sometimes. Seeing it described as "leonine" or like a lion makes since, lions are frequently on Cilician Armenian coins being on the standard kings dynasty.

Feel free to post any of your coins from Cilician Armenia.

An impressive - and big - coin, Chris. Neat area to move into. I've used David Ruckser's Cilician Armenia to ID these coins for years. For those who may want to venture into this collecting area, the text is a free resource (along with Ruckser's other medieval coinage ebooks), available these days on academia.edu.

BTW, always a pleasure to see you back home at CCF.

A super coin @chrs and in much better condition than this Tank issued by Hetoum between 1226 and 1270 AD. I believe that under Hetoum's stewardship, Cilician Armenia "switched teams" and joined the Mongols. My Tank was also minted at Sis.

Hey thanks Bob, it's nice to be back at CCF!

Thanks a cool tank Spence, I didn't know these guys were Mongol vassals. I had to look up your guy on wikipedia, he has a pretty interesting story as well.
