Having won an unidentified lot of three similar coins in a recent Frank Robinson auction, I was excited to go about the identification process. From his auction notes:

Quote:
Trio of coins found in this Judaic collection I could not identify, Æ 14-20 mm, each features branch in circle, possibly Islamic?

I'm quite sure now that they are all Umayyad Fals dating from the very end of the 7th Century to the middle of the 8th Century. While the diameter of these pieces ranges from 14 mm to 20 mm and the weight ranges between 1.60 g and 2.00 g, these numbers seem to be well within the ranges of specimens posted on numista, acsearch, and zeno. The mint is al-Ramlah, which at one time was part of Palestine, but seems to now be part of Israel. There is an interesting article in the Journal of the Royal Asiatic Society by Luz that talks more about the origins of this city ("The Construction of an Islamic City in Palestine. The Case of Umayyad al-Ramla"). The founding of al-Ramlah at the beginning of the 8th Century AD was unique in that a new city hadn't been built in Palestine for more than 350 years and would be the last founded in that country for more than a millennium. The attribution is Album 185.

Congrats on ID'ing the trio, Dave. Always fun to pick up and attribute unidentified coins, learn some new things along with way, then share it with others here. Well done.

Several years ago I won a lot of unidentified Greek AE coins, it was very fun to ID them, that can be a total blast.

Cool coin too, I like it when Islamic coins have some Iconography on them, I just bought one this weekend I'll post elsewhere. Looks like there is a tree on the obverse?
