Posing for a friend, 1861 Ft Sumter brass so called dollar. "Bombing of Ft Sumter" 17.1 Grams.(11B) Has been stored in a old colored coin envelope for years.

Thoughts on grade? He is contemplating sending it to NGC. They were made in Silver/Brass/ Copper. This one is brass.I know nothing of these, so I am no help to him so am posting here.

Appreciate any comments and your expertise! Thanks as always, RK

Thank You for the links Hondo Boguss!

I did find a sale on 11/21 at Baltimore U.S.coins auction (11-B) PCGS-63 Lot #1062. Sold for $3,100.Stack's Bowers.

The one in your link was $1,920, but was MS-65 and a copper coin (11C)

This one looks as nice as the PCGS-63. Can't be too many around (R-7)

It is super cool. I take it that the medal was actually issued in 1861 as a sort of propaganda piece for the Union war effort? Just an excellent bit of history captured in that medal, and good artistic value, too.

@ Brandmeister,

From what I can tell, it is a period piece.

Quoted from NGC

"The Bombardment of Fort Sumter Dollar was likely struck soon after the event, as the Union capitalized on the heroics of these men to encourage enlistment. Unfortunately, the origin of the piece has been elusive to researchers. Dewitt lists this piece as being muled with a McClellan campaign medal, the dies for which were made by George H. Lovett of New York in 1864."

From the images provided, it appears to be a Mint State piece (MS-64 or better). IMO, having it in a NGC holder would likely aid in selling it / increase its selling price (if it comes back with a high MS grade),
