I am new to coins, can someone please help me sort out how many Chinese/lunar/year of zodiac coin series were issued since they started in 1998? and what their names are? To my knowledge there was the 1. All 12 animals on the outer edge and the year of the animal in the center (1998-2009) 2. Scalloped edge sterling silver series (2010-2021) 3. 1/2 oz series, I think they were the 10 dollar coins (not sure if it was a series) 4. $15 dollar coins, fine silver series ( 2011? to 2023?)
I am new to coins, these different series confuses me and the Mint site does not have complete pictures. Would really appreciate some help sorting things out! Many thanks

Keeping just to Canada's silver coins of one ounce or less, I'm aware of the following series:
1998-2009: $15 Silver Chinese Lunar Series 2010-2021: $15 Silver Series - Scalloped Edge 2010-2021: $15 Silver Series - Round 2004: Privy-marked Silver Maple Leaf coins 2012-2020: $10 Silver Series (Series was not completed) 2017: $3 Silver Series with Crystals 2019: $5 Silver Series with Constellations
There have also been gold zodiac coin series plus a variety of individual silver coins with zodiac themes with various embelishments and/or of larger sizes/weights. It depends on how far you'd like to take your collection. Also, zodiac coin series have been issued by countries beyond Canada. Australia, for example, has releases multiple silver zodiac series over the years.
I would suggest picking up a current copy of the Charlton Catalogue: Volume 2. It should serve as a good reference source.

Welcome to the CCF Commems has described it all. Would add, that 'sold' ebay listings will be great indicator for the market prices of these coins, as well pictures.

Hi cool_coins, Here are the scalloped outer edge coins. Beside the outstanding coins, the wooden case is the best I have seen. I know they say to collect the coin, not the case - but this set is different. I don't have a picture of the case but you can find it on ebay.

I finally got my "2004: Privy-marked Silver Maple Leafs" collection completed. It's taken a few years, 3 coins are still in their Mint Pacs, and 2 certificates are missing. I'll put them all in holders when I find a suitable case for them. All-in-all a nice collection to add to my 2010-2021 $15 series (both boxed).

Mikem, cool collection. I've been thinking about the maple privy's as well. What made you choose 2004? Does every year have numerous privy's?

Possible I haven't followed it up few recent years, but I do not recall singly Privy SML since 2017. They were definitively popular 2010 -2015, and lot's of them were commissioned by various of parties.

I haven't seen any more past that year, although there may be some unlisted ones out in the wild. 2018 Canada $5 Edison Light Bulb Privy SML 2018 Canada $5 Year of the Dog Privy SML 2019 Canada $5 Edison Phonograph Privy SML Quote: I've been thinking about the maple privy's as well. What made you choose 2004? I saw 5 or 6 on sale at Colonial Acres about 4 years ago, and it peaked my interest. I've bought the missing ones as I saw them on sale. The last one I needed was Cancer, which I found in August.

Quote: I'll put them all in holders when I find a suitable case for them. Something to look for... There was a special, large-format, hinged case produced (bright red) for the sponsor of the series that held the coins in a ring pattern. It had a two-ounce silver medal in the center that featured each of the 12 zodiac symbols found on the individual privy-marked SMLs. It makes for a nice presentation. I'll try to pull mine out and post an image.

Quote: What made you choose 2004? This particular Western Zodiac privy-marked SML series was only issued in 2004; it was not an annual issue. The 2004 series was commissioned by Universal Coins out of Ottawa.
