For those who has knowledge about taxes for precious metal importation.

I bought some items for USA and was surprised to be taxed. I needed to pay at Canada Post in order to have my parcel released.

My understanding is that for 99.99% silver and gold we don't pay taxes, is that right?

Now, 2 items were 99.99% silver but there is a fee for the engraving. Can I request to be taxed only for the engraving fees? The invoice clearly separates the charges.

Nevertheless, I think that the clasification numbers used by the shop are wrong, they used: 970290000 (arts/vintage) and 982520000 (special classification). Which are the clasification codes that should been used, specially for 99.99% silver?

Thanks

I suggest filing a complaint/ appeal asking for a re-classification. It may not be quick but the Canada Post decision is not the last word.

The code that should have been used is 9705.00.00
Which has a definition of the following: Collections and collectors' pieces of archaeological, ethnographic, historical, zoological, botanical, mineralogical, anatomical, paleontological or numismatic interest:

This is the code I use all the time and never have a problem.

Thanks. And for bullion you use the same code?

Bullion silver bars that I always knew they should not be taxed : https://www.silvertowne.com/product...lver-bar-3pc

And 2 gifts, that are 99.99% silver so I supposed they should be handled as all the coins that sell RCM that even if it's for collection and come in a clamshell are never taxed .

https://www.silvertowne.com/product...-in-gift-box

There is a separate charge for engraving $5 so maybe that fee could be taxed but not everything .....
