This 42 was in my unsearched wheat bag. The reverse was covered in large part (you can see where) by an unknown substance. A short bath in acetone and it came right off. Whatever it was, the wheat reverse was mostly protected for 81 years until the bath. Nice reverse. I also think there is a nice head crack. Edited by southsav 09/07/2023 5:03 pm

My guess is it was glued to something at one point. The glue protected the surface underneath it and now the copper looks like new. John1

I've found a few various wheat cents with very similar characteristics--acetone removes crud/film--leaving a very bright, like new, surface.

That's pretty cool. The glue ended up protecting that area of the coin, on the reverse.

Maybe they were onto something way back when with the glue.
A way to keep all those copper coins red forever!!

Nice! Acetone to the rescue. So where did you get the bag? Might be interested in trying one.

These were wheats I'd set aside over the years from searching through many cent boxes. I just forgot about them and recently came across them so I went through them more carefully giving some of them a bath. Had 3 1909's. 2 no vdb, 1 vdb, but no 1909 S.
