Prototype Obverse Design for South Korean 100-Hwan Coin.

Prototype-Obverse-Design-For-South-Korean-100-Hwan-Coin

This design is circa 1962, and meant to replace the image of President Rhee's left-facing bust after his removal from office in April 1960. This design was never adopted since the June 1962 Currency Reform replaced the "hwan" denomination with the "won" (which is currently the money used in South Korea).

The building seen in this design is the 9th Century AD "Cheomseongdae" (Star-gazing Platform) astronomical observatory from the Silla Dynasty that stands in Gyeongju, Korea. It is the oldest still-standing observatory of its kind in East Asia.

That is pretty cool!

I think it's a shame that this is not featured. This would have been struck at the height of space race in the 1960s and this would have been a perfect space theme.

Imagine if this sparked an interest in young kids in South Korea back in those times...
