I agree that the rim is not part of the design per se, but it is milled into the die on most rimmed coins though, right? I've used lathe lines in the rims or other defects to ID whether coins came from the same die. I can see where it wouldn't show up on the off-center above because the die didn't go far enough into the planchet. I might be misunderstanding the discussion...
