I came across this 1798 Draped Bust Large Cent in my grandmother's collection. I'm not sure of its value, but I am troubled by the verdigris spots on it. Should I leave it as is, or should I attempt to restore it with Verdi-Care? I would like to keep this coin in the Dansco US Type album in which it is currently housed, but I have read that verdigris can spread to other coins. Also, does anyone know what the purpose of those stamps on the coin are? Thanks. Edited by Aurelius 09/15/2023 01:37 am

The stamps are somebody's idea of a joke, done quite a long time after the coin was minted. People are forever altering coins for any one of a thousand reasons.

In this condition I don't think it could hurt to use Verdi-Care, but even if you'e successful, the color of the surface beneath the spots will almost certainly differ from the surrounding area.

Sort of looks like someone started spooning it too.

If you want, used Verdi-Care. It shouldn't hurt.

That coin is toast, do whatever you are comfortable with.

I've got some Verdi-Care on order. It will my first time using it. I'll see how it goes.
So, was someone trying to simply deface the coin, or is there something specific they were trying to do to the image, like with the "potty dollar"?

@Aurelius, all we can do is speculate-and yours is just as good as anyone else's, unless the person who did it left an explanation.

There's no way to know. It's just a miserable cull at this point. I wouldn't pay $5 for it, honestly.
