I have acquired an 1879 Indian Head cent that looks to be a double die obverse. It also has what looks like die chip errors. Is there a possibility to get some verification on my find.

This is not a doubled die - you can't have doubling on both sides of the same device or lettering. I think in is DDD or something similar.
as for that 'thing' in front of the face - is it raised or incuse?

I believe that this is called Longacre's Doubling. https://www.error-ref.com/longacre-s-doubling/

Edit: That mark on the obverse could be a Struck Through error or damage.

Indeed I see Longacre doubling of the letters. Can't tell if the other mark is damage or a strike through.

Whenever I see a "damage or strike thru" coin, I look on the area of the coin opposite the effect for any clues. Can you post a pic of the reverse?
