This is gonna sound dumb but I hate waste. Soooooo, what's your opinion for repurposing the silica packs that come with some products to help protect coins? For example, some dog treats include such packets. (Can;t wait to read responses on that point!)

The best stuff is from the original large drug containers, the pharmaist usually just throw them out because they have so many, obviously they are food grade

I have repurposed small desiccant pouches for my coin containers for years. Recommend 100%.

You need to be careful with the silica packs. They can only store a limited amount of water before they evaporate it back into the closed environment. Most silica packs are designed to remove humidity from a closed environment by the time they are taken out they have most likely been used up. Amazon sells rechargeable dehumidifiers (tried to post the link but was blocked). They last about 60 days before needing to be recharged. The silica packs that come in packages have the same shelf life, so if not replacing them every 60 days they are adding humidity or whatever chemicals they absorbed back into the closed package with your coins.

Silica gel is rechargeable; just put it in an oven at 100 deg C for 30 minutes, and it's good to go again.
The main drawback with reusing using those little silica gel sachets is that there's no visual indicator on the gel packet when the gel is exhausted and needs recharging. This is why that self-indicating silica gel is good - the stuff that's blue when dry, and turns pink when damp. It turns blue again after the oven treatment.

I'd recommend NOT using packs from greasy materials like treats. There will be transfer to the pack during it's first life and you probably don't want that.
If you have a collection with any real value and are in the type of environment where you have enough humidity to be concerned, this isn't a place to cheap out. You can buy 60# of the rechargeable beads for $250... what's the value of one coin?

My oldest is 8 years old and it still is removing the humidity. They are supposed to last 10 years. https://www.amazon.com/Improved-Eva..._=ast_sto_dpBest part is that you don't need to put in the oven, just plug it in for about 6-8 hours and its all dry. I recommend these compared to the silica packs. Please note that there are no name brands also, I do not recommend those as 1 they cost more than eva dry and when cheaper the one I did purchase (thinking it was an eva dry) came loose with silica pebbles all inside the package. So buy Eva Dry only. Note to Bobby, it seems to be the Amazon link from my iPhone, works fine on a laptop but Amazon shortens the link when using the Amazon ap

My advice: purchase a rechargeable silica pack/canister (multiple if needed) and protect your coins properly vs. wasting time trying to re-purpose used packets from other products.

Well here in Phoenix AZ we don't need them (at least in the summer) we only got .01 inches of rain this 'monsoon season' (or was it .1 inches? either way it sure is dry here.
