In trying to determine a goal for a collection for my son, I am looking for a site or source for a list of counties around the world that had coins in 2009 ( his birth year). This would give him a target rather than just amassing bulk. He could pick a favorite from each and then trade the rest for what he is missing. He just needs some direction or suggested parameters. Does anyone know of a site or source that I can get this info? Edited by BankmanCometh 09/21/2023 10:43 pm

Your best approach would be to pick up a copy of Krause Standard Catalog of World Coins. It doesn't have to be the newest one - just one published after 2009. It will be an essential and needed reference in any case.

There are online world coin databases, such as the one at NGC. However, they don't allow you to print out a list of all the coins made in a specific year. It would be a very long list - especially if you can't filter out NCLT coins.

It seems like it would be easier to start with a list of countries, and then choose a coin from each of them. All countries have currency, so it's safe to assume 99% of them will have issued coins in 2009. Although with the global financial meltdown, that is a tough year for collecting specimens.

Fun idea!
All UK coins from 1p to £2 were struck for circulation that year but the 50p is the Kew Gardens type and is very scarce and expensive! (The regular design 50p was only issued in BU and Proof sets). Across the Eurozone, issues in 2009 were patchy. Most countries issued at least one denomination for circulation, but many still had large stocks of 2002-dated coins and didn't need to mint any more. France, for instance, issued no 50-cent coins at all for circulation between 2003 and 2017, although you can buy a 2009 BU set with a complete set of all the coins. Spain and Slovakia did issue every denomination from 1c through 2 euros for circulation in 2009.

@bank, collecting "one from every country" is a popular style for creating a numismatic collection, although your idea to limit it to a specific year is an interesting twist. As such, this question comes up with some frequency. Here are links to a couple previous CCF threads to help you with your research: http://goccf.com/t/168131http://goccf.com/t/155162

Lots of people collect coins from their birth year. Unfortunately Hondo Boguss is correct the best option would be to locate an older copy of the Krause catalog and crete your own list. On thing though it would probably have to be one printed after about 2014 as the books often were about 3 to 4 years behind on listing recent issues. A 2010 edition would list some of the 2009 coins, the 2011 would list more of them, the 2012 even more and so on. By 2014 probably most of the 2009 would have been reported and listed.
By the time the last edition was printed I had two double row 14 inch boxes of recent issues that weren't listed in the catalog and some of those coins went back 6 years or more.
