This coin is currently up for auction at Heritage ,so do not look at grade until you post your grade and comments. I had put in a strong bid at my max and was just outbid. The auction ends on Monday night. I like the circulated cameo look, but I did have some concerns that the cameo appearance may of had some help.

I'll say VF35. Yes, looks a little odd, artificially rubbed to improve the cameo. However, I'm very much a novice on these things.

Great detail, decent strike. 35 was what I came up with. I like the popping facial features and hair detail.

i like it. the overall sharpness of the devices puts it in the XF40 box for me. I hope you get a decent price for it. I don't think I could have parted with this one.

PCGS graded the coin at VF35. The example sold for $4800. The highest price previously for a 1799 VF 35 was $3250.

I agree with PCGS VF-35 opinion.
The attractive cameo wear that results in that grade would attract a higher bid than what the net grade would indicate. it is worth remembering that over the coming decades that
this coin should tone to a more even (and less cameo) appearance.

So so you shouldn't be too disappointed that your maximum bid was unsuccessful.
Bonus: you get to save your money and use it to bid on something else that you may set your heart on sometime in the future. That is my attitude in situations like this

It looks XF-40 to me. I expect the strong price reflects the eye appeal and chance of undergrading.
