I have noticed a relatively recent uptick in ebay listings for Lincoln Cents, where the seller thinks their "L (of Liberty) Touching Rim" or " no mint mark" (such as 1944 cents) are worth hundreds of dollars.

Where is this coming from?

They are not rare or worth a premium. Neither are floating roofs and missing FG cents.

Yeah I've noticed the uptick in " L on rim" cents recently as well, I've been very curious what the source of that one was.

The "no mintmarks" have always been around I think. Combination of people who usually only get Denver mint coins out west and those who misunderstand the no S proof coins.

Its youtube & other online outlets. Anybody can be anything they want to nowadays, all one has to do is simply assign a title to themselves, point a phone at their face & make a video talking about things. For the longest time, I kept seeing one young lady on the "tube" & she was a self-professed "Coin Expert" & in her video she was talking about.... "Double Dies". Not "Doubled?" There's your sign!

A fool and their money are soon parted. People trying to get rich off of fools. Makes the hobby look bad. I don't know what to do about it other than call it out.

I'm under the impression that this is responsible for most of it, but I can't point to an original source. It has morphed into people thinking they need to say " no mint" or " no mint mark" even when they aren't thinking it's valuable. It seems picky to point this out to people but it really irks me.

And, as we have seen, once enough people do it, ebay itself starts recommending to people that they put such things in their titles.

There are a ton of these on ebay, search for "1944 Wheat penny L rim error" I get back 648 results. Mostly 0 feed back sellers.

I use to see this stuff on Etsy , now it is flooding ebay.....such a shame.

...you're looking at probable low-end money laundering / payments for drugs, guns, prostitution, etc ... low level crimes no one has time to investigate or pursue ... prolific on a lot of auction / sales sites, world -wide ...

...and, if some gullible buyer happens along, well, all the better (worse)...

Oh dear, NSS-52 - that first one.... it may be listed for $1499.99 with $2500 shipping, but it's in "Good" condition.
