I am a relatively new to coin collecting and am new to this forum. Does anyone have any idea what these marks are on this nickel? I think these may be Rockwell hardness test marks, but am not sure. The bumps do go all the way through the coin. Any help would be appreciated.

any marks like that are far more likely to be damage, additionally, the Rockwell test marks are circular

gschmidtjd,

Looks like PMD to me. Feel free to use the search box upper left of page for more info. We get this question a few times per year.

Yes could be from a BB gun, but regardless these depressions are mechanical damage.

No for a number of reasons.

Rockwell hardness test wouldn't show up on the other side.

I believe they are conducted in the fields of the dies or coins to get accurate results.

They wouldn't be as large as these appear to be.
