I've been going through my pocket change to see if anything is worth more than face value and found this one. I'm hoping that it is a 1992D Close AM Lincoln Penny. Is this a 1992D Close AM?

Nope, sorry to say. The A and M would actually be touching. Better luck next time.

First off, glad you can ask us!

This is the very common Wide AM, in the close version, these letters are nearly touching. Also a nice looking cent all around...

I'm circling back to provide some education - that is the goal of the forum after all.

The best diagnostic for determining if you coin is a WAM or CAM is actually the A in T-A-T of STATES.

If the A is centered between the two T then the coin is a WAM variety regardless of what the AM spacing might look like.

If the A is much closer to the second T then the coin is a CAM variety.

A quick look at your coin using this diagnostics makes it immediately obvious as a WAM.

Thanks Nickel. I didn't know that detail about CAM's & WAM's! Very Helpful.

Ive had some coins where it was hard to tell if the A is centered or not. What do you do then? The space between the AM can also be confusing because some close AMs arent actually touching but theyre still considered close

My first PUP on these is the space between the memorial and the FG. Cam= wide space, WAM= close spacing. Never failed me yet.
