Hi All,

I'm looking at this coin for a good friend who is a collector:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dl...110359829513

Beyond the blurry pictures, how does this look?

I'm looking for this year coin for this price or less. It simply needs to be readable.

Thanks for the help.

Welcome to Coin Community, bfisher690.

I wouldn't touch this coin on a bet. It's not even close to the claimed grade, in my opinion - I don't think it's any better than VG10 and probably VG8. It's pictured in a slab from a company which is notorious for overgrading and problem coins - they're not on the list of "recommended" graders - and if NNC is calling it "cleaned," well, it's probably been hit by a grinder.

The asking price is that of a nice, original VG10. The value of a cleaned VG10 is considerably less. This issue, although scarce, doesn't climb dramatically in price until you reach the AU level. My advice would be to advise your friend to tack another $300 on to his budget, and shoot for a VF-XF example from a regular dealer. With judicious shopping, you should be able to land an XF40 in a reputable slab for $1500.

In short, this is not a coin you buy on ebay.

I see no real problem with the seller - his feedback is excellent and he's offering coins in "reputable" slabs as well - but a valuable coin in a third-world slab is a red flag.

Dave has hit a homerun on this one. I second his assessment. Step away from your keyboard and let this one pass.

Absolutely. Not only is the coin over graded I guarantee, there is also a question of it's authenticity. Key-dates belong in major TPG holders only

NNC is one of those companies that doesn't even bother to alter coins; they just print the wrong date on the slabs.
