As I've mentioned before, I find a lot of loose change, usually in large quantities at one time (not by way of coin roll hunting). Today I was going through what I'd just found, and saw the back of a
Wheat cent that was unexpectedly bright -- basically no tarnish, like it had been cleaned. Then I was
really surprised to see the date: 1909? No way! Quickly getting a magnifying glass, I was even more surprised to see the "V.D.B." on the back.
Having found thousands of pennies in the last several years, this was the first time I've found a
Wheat cent date that I didn't already have. This is now also the oldest coin I've ever simply found (narrowly beating the 1913 Ottoman Empire coin I found recently).
This had to have been part of someone's collection, put back into circulation recently, either accidentally or intentionally. I don't know if it's been cleaned, and I don't care how much (or little) it might be worth. I'm just glad I finally got to fill an empty slot in my Lincoln wheat cents album! (Pretty much all of the rest of the ones I have in the album were given to me some 25 years ago.)
