Hi there,

I would like to hear grade opinions but also if possible, why oyu give it that grade. And also, can you tell if this is large or small 9's?

I have pictures to tell me the difference between the 2 but I dont see that big a difference. I guess I would need both varieties next to each other to see it myself.

Hi Malissa, I would put the grade around VF30-35
Going by my Charest book, the date on this one looks more like "large 99" they picture--although it doesn't look exactly the same. .
The small 99 are definitely more "hooked" than these.

They look like the Large "9s" to me, also I would agree with the grade of VF-35.

hi everyone,

thanks for the grades. Here is my problem. I am aware that everyone here is somewhat better at grading than me. I tend to stick to exact grades.....vf20 or xf40. I don't know how to determine what's in between those. I would appreciate if you have some time explaining both how you came to the conclusion of VF35 (what are the identifying marks you used) so I can learn to see what you see,

and also how would I apply a value to something like this?
Charlton 2009 has a huge price jump between the 2 grades VF $40 XF $250 (that's for the lg 9's variety.)

I appreciate any education I can get from you

It's actually the small 99 variety and a grade of VF30 IMO. I know you are looking for clarification on the 1899 varieties. Email me if you want info on them as there are more than just 3.

I'm in the middle of making a full out awesome NFLD thread but I'm unsure if I should post it in the World or Canada forums. I'll post it in the world for now as that gets more traffic but it can be moved as a mod sees fit.

Please put it in the Canadian forum where more collectors of Newfoundland coins are likely to look.
