Here's a coin I found at at the show today. For a while, I've been looking for the 1884 "rounded chin" variety (also called portrait C1 in Charlton's). I'm used to seeing a distinctly doubled chin (even when worn), but this one stood out from all the others I've seen. What do you think? In Charest's book, this is called "Obverse 1": (photo from his book)

looks good to me. has the bump at the end of the nose too. Top of nose is flush with middle of eye not top of eyelid. Bust line points to between beads. I would agree with Obverse 1

Nice Kurt, good eye! How close are you to finishing your large cents?

Thanks for confirming...you noticed a few things I didn't. As for "finishing" my large cents...well, I don't collect so much by date sets, only the varieties. I have the 1882-H/H, and this will be my second variety.

KurtS, that is unquestionably a C1 type. Here are a few other markers. The neckline comes to a point on the C1, and is more rounded on a C2. The most obvious, and easiest marker is the N in REGINA. The serif at the foot of the N is quite large on the C1, and is not seen like that on C2 coins. Where did you find that one? I've seen only one or two on ebay in all of 2008-09.

Nice! I had to go check mine, but it's definitely the Obverse 2 variety. KurtS

Skelly, thanks for more info on the markers for C1! Chequer thanks! Yep, I'm surprised I found one...persistence paid off! I've searched ebay too, but never saw a definite there. This was found at a coin show, in the album of a dealer from Oregon.

Nice coin-I have 13 of the c-2 but only one of the c-1. Yours is a little better than mine. Great find. Olmanjon

This is a great coin! It's probably the hardest to find in the Victoria cent series. The markers mentioned are good ones. I use the tip of crown at the bead line, the N in REGINA, the bust truncation at the bead line and lastly the rounded chin/throat area. Great find!
