I made my bf buy me a set of uncirculated state park quarters for my birthday and they just came in. Going through them, I found this Vermont state park quarter with a ding in it. My question really is how can I differentiate between PMD and struck through an object?

That 'ding' was caused by the reeds of another quarter. Some will say "Bag Marks or hits" When these quarters were mi9nted, they were 'dropped' into a lather large catch bag before getting packaged up for shipping.

(you can see another one on the reverse on the kids shoulder.)

Good question @sam. Here we need to get a little technical though. We define PMD as post-mint damage, while PSD is post-strike damage. This bag mark on George's head certainly happened after the coin was struck, but may have occurred at the mint. In the end though this is damage of one sort or another and doesn't increase the value of the coin.

I didn't realize there was a difference between PSD and PMD! Would you happen to have a good reference for PSD?

I'm interested to see what others say, but I'd say that PMD is a subset of PSD, where the only difference is that the damage occurred at the mint after striking for the latter.
