Certainly does not look typical to me. Never seen anything even close.

the quarter in this proof set is almost exactly the same and the nickel has no toning at all. I've only opened 7-8 'sealed' 1961 sets and this is the first without toning on the 5c

That is in an after market holder, who know how long ago it was placed in it. The toning looks orange to me - which is very odd. It doesn't even look like a proof to me.

The frosting on the inscriptions makes me think it is a proof. That is an odd color though.

That's strange toning on a proof coin.

I doubt it was plated assuming it came from a sealed proof set.

it came from a proof set where the envelope was still sealed. I think I will start a new thread about the rest of the set, showing the toned quarter and untone nickel ... or should I just add on to this thread?
interestingly, the internal pockets of the set between the half and quarter were compromised, the half was actually half in the quarter pocket when I opened it.
i am kinda wondering if it could've been artificially toned somehow, like with a syringe of something shot into it through the envelope. I know that sounds far fetched but I'm new and have a vivid imagination :)

I have seen many with this color toning and I think I have a raw one somewhere. I'll try to find and follow up with a pic.

It just dawned on me that I bought the quarters and not the halves from those sets. So I have quarters that have that style toning. I hope I can find to show.

Wondering if an issue with the photo's white balance might be contributing to the very strong coloration...
