I wanted a recent issue of civil coinage of the same kind as the early fals. I saw an attractive one recently on sale and got it.

The seller identified it is from Afghanistan, 1904. Should be depicting the blue mosque of Mazar e Sharif.

The date reads to me as 1322, so 1904 was correct. That puts it in the time of Habibullah Khan.
But what denomination is this? What kind of coin?

I found a near match here: https://en.numista.com/catalogue/pieces68050.html
But mine weights

There are copper coins of Afghanistan called paisa. Is this one of those?

Should I try to clear the reverse a bit or safer to leave it as it is? Copper coins are so at risk of corrosion.

With that structure on the first pic, it sure looks like Afghanistan to me. I personally would not clean this coin at all, unless the green deposits on the other side are chalky and powdery, in which case it might be bronze disease.

Yes, exactly as described.
This one is overstruck on an Iran 50 Dinars.

Nice. Struck over another, that is why the reverse had to be rotated nearly 180º to read the date. Oddity explained. Thanks!

Wanted to write weights more. 4.6g. I now see it matches the weight of the 50 dinars coin. I failed to notice the still visible crown and other features of the base coin. Thought those rays were part of an odd design

I will leave it as it is. Reverse seems stable.
