Hi,

Can someone tell me why these quarters have hue to them? What causes this?

1. I have 2/2000 North Carolina P Quarters with pinkish hue on the entire backs of the coins. I can't capture it correctly, but it is close to what you see. Actually, the holder I have it in is a bit darker than the color I am seeing.

2. I have 1/2000 Massachusetts P Quarter with definite blue around the images/letters, but not on the entire coin surface. It's also on the front/back like this. I could capture this well in my scope and is what you see.

I'm keeping them either way because I think they're neat, but I'm curious.

Thanks

Caused by exposure to an unknown environmental condition. Most attractive!

It's environmental toning.

amyj1970,

The first pic might be a gold-plated coin. Nickel clad coins sometimes tend to tone a nice golden color.

Thanks for the responses. It's not gold plated for sure, I know the picture absolutely makes it look a yellowish color - but it's just pinkish. I'll hang on to them just for fun!
