Hello,

Dad recently passed away and his coin collection needs to be appraised as some pieces will need to sold and other are wanted to be kept by family members. Collection varies from US gold, silver and circulated coins from 1910 and up as well as UK coins from the 1800s and upward.

Dad didn't properly store these coins (except for the ones he purchased which came in boxes or books). The rest are loose and/or individually wrapped in saran wrap and stored in jars or plastic containers.

Looking for guidance on how to assemble and properly maintain the coins which I find interesting (even non valuable coins - some of the artwork is amazing).

Also trying to figure out the best way to start sorting through the collection - we are talking high hundred or low thousand in the number of coins which I need to sift though. I purchased a 30x magnifier so I can better view the coins and ordered a coin collecting book to read.

Coin collecting and scourin loose change is a hobby I want to get into as it is something shared with my dad and also incorporates history - which I really like.

Will post under appropriate categories with specific questions. Many thanks in advance for your input and guidance.

to the CCF, dldmetz! My condolences for your loss. I was in that situation a while back and know exactly what you are facing.
If these are US coins, your next step should be acquiring a Red Book - A Guide Book of United States coins by R. S. Yeoman. An internet search will provide many choices of vendors.
It has brief grading guide for each coin, but the values may be high. A better idea of value for each would be to look at ebay sold prices.
Best wishes with your endeavor!

If you happen to have an Ollie's in town, someone posted they have the Red Book on sale for $5.95 which is a fraction of the cost.

Thank you for the suggestions. I purchased a Spiral version of the 2023 Red Book on Amazon for $15.49. Unfortunately no Ollies by me.

Does anyone know of a good book/guide for UK Coins?

Too funny. I got a 2021 Red Book at Ollie's a couple months ago for five bucks.
