Here's a coin that doesn't come around every day. There are fewer than 100 1872-CC $10 gold pieces thought to exist, so it's not everyday that you see one. I am curious to hear everyone's thoughts on both gthe grade and authenticity of this coin.

Bad pictures but here is my Two Cents: VG to F. The obverse scratch running from the 1 to 7 position really hurts it and "might" detail it (providing if it is even the real deal!). If it were mine I'd do the tests available (weight, fineness, dimensions and comparisons to others in similar grades) and if everything checks out I'd submit it to ANACS for a quick authentication. You can ask here all day long and you'll end up getting answers all over the map. Might as well send it off.

Can't argue with that, but first Google "1872-CC $10 Eagle Images" and enlarge the many reverse images shown.

Agreed, VG to F at best.
Errers and Varietys.

the MM is flattened due to wear as well as a poor photo so its difficult to get a good read whether they look right. if authentic VG10. your looking at a $15-18k coin so why isn't it slabbed and authenticated. doesn't sound right

This coin was up at auction and ended up selling for $2,425. I ended up not pulling the trigger because I wasn't certain on the authenticity. If the coin does turn out to be genuine, the buyer got a score.

Be interesting to see when/if it shows up slabbed in another auction down the road.

Looks to have the photos of nationalrarities on ebay. Winter says 60-70 known. Please please please do not dismiss authenticity based on mintmark position. That is absolutely not a reason to assume that, unless there is only one die pairing known. This coin is most likely authentic and matches with variety Winter 1-A. If you do not have a clue about a series, do not give misleading opinions. Many are quick to dismiss authenticity or pretend to know something, when in reality they are misguiding curious numismatists.

The intention was not to mislead but to simply give an opinion, based on pictorial comparison/observation. Northern Nv Coin has 4 of them listed on their site for sale .... https://northernnevadacoin.com/shop/?pa_date=1872 IMO, the mm did not look correct, in my mind (potentially) could be a red flag. IF something does not make sense (doesn't matter what scenario it is) I will still supply an opinion.... right/wrong, I'd hope to be educated, not stifled.
