the obv is not as strong as you thing on this one. the ear definition, the bowtie where it meets the lapel is fully defined as well. there are too many rim nicks on the obv to qualify for a 67 of which PCGS shows only 37 graded at that level. the lapel and shoulder are quite clean. the reverse is decently struck and the tick on the last step is of no significance as I've seen similar on even 67's. there is some small spots of the fields on both sides and some small areas of discoloration/blotchy color on the right obv field
i don't think the coin can make 67 or maybe even 66 due to the obv. so I have to put this one in the MS65RD box

Looks EDS to me, lots of little carbon spots and a couple stains. The coin doesn't "pop" to my eyes and the surfaces look "dirty".
65, maybe 66 if it's bright and lustrous - no chance at 67 IMO.

65, maybe 66 if it's bright and lustrous - no chance at 67 IMO. It doesn't pop at all. You hit the nail on the head with the surfaces being dirty. My objective here was to see if you guys thought it was an early die state. This coin would not make it to ms-64. It is dull as dull can be.

Appears to be in an Early Die State (EDS). Grade might be MS-65.

The easiest way to judge the die state is by looking at IN GOD WE TRUST and UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. As dies age the tops of these letters start moving out at the top toward the rims. On the early die state coins the tops of the letters are sharp and well defined.

On the early die state coins the tops of the letters are sharp and well defined. Seems easy enough and that's what I have been going by, in addition to looking at die flow lines. This makes me fell a little better about how I was viewing a coin. I always appreciate the help from you guys.

sharper reverse than obverse but that's to be expected since the Memorial hub was new that year, MS-65

My grandparents had a roll of 1959 D 's that they gave me and I submitted 10 or so to Anacs a few years back for grins and giggles. I received 6 64's, 4 65's and 1 66. Pretty tough to get a high grade on these for sure.

MS-65 Tops Black Speck free surfaces are available on this issue and your coin has too many for this issue The strike on the obverse is very poor from the back collar to the shoulder, the tie is not struck well 1959-D was struck well on obv and reverse even though you have clean surfaces, those are trumped by the issues mentioned and then there are the rim dings. I recommend Bower's or Lange's book on Lincoln Cents, very good info on strike qualities and general coin quality--not all years are created equal.
