Found this 1980 D nickel and would like to know if you think this is Machine Doubling or actual doubling, basically, is it an error coin? It's in pretty sad shape so I'm sure it doesn't have much value, but I have been searching for an error coin for most my life and this is the closest I've come. I appreciate and value all of your opinions. Thank you.

Define "error coin". If you would accept a current model Jefferson nickel DDR as a genuine error coin, the lines-in-doors varieties are easy to spot. I found three in $20 of nickels, and only half of them were 2006-2023. They are fairly common on Philadelphia nickels from 2014, 2019, 2020.

If you get mostly Denver nickels, then the chances are close to zero, unfortunately.

Just a note: there is a difference between an error and a variety.
