I'm learning about errors and varieties since wasting hundreds of dollars grading what I thought was errors and varieties. Rather than sending in a 1988 Penny with what looks like a DDR to me, I'm hoping to get some consensus of what the odd lettering shapes are due to. Some letters are wider at the bottom than the top. Thank you!

Really nice pics on this thread @cob--well done!

The thinner-than-expected letter and parallel lines visible at the tops of the letters are both signs that the die used to strike this coin was tired. Here is a link to more info:

Thank you Spence! Although all the photo examples on error.ref don't show my oddities exactly, the similarities are unmistakable and I will refrain from sending it for grading.

I'm using a D4 Digital Microscope which I use to inspect and sell coins with.

John1, yes. A micro-SD card to carry over to my computer to upload to ebay. I don't like connecting the microscope directly to the computer. Too many cables around as is.

Nice images! but the coin was struck by a worn and tired die with some possible polishing done to it.
