Hi - new to the forum and coin collecting. My dad passed away and I have been tasked with going through the hoardes of loose older coins he had as well as his coin collection.

While sorting out the pennies by decades, I immediately noticed this penny. What the heck happened to it? Based upon my limited knowledge and what I have been researching on my own, it could be roll/bag damage but wanted to get some more experienced insights. Many thanks in advance!

@dld, first welcome to CCF. Second, yes you are correct that those gouges are mechanical damage rather than a mint error.

Appears to be 'old school' mechanical vending machine damage--possibly damage from an old, out-of-spec coin roll crimping machine.

dldmetz,

I agree it is PMD. Also, please do not post photos of your scopes' screen...thanks. Use a memory card in your scope.

Hi John

This may seem a dumb question, but what is a scope screen?
