I am looking to get a few recent modern gold coins and figured I would buy graded ones while I am at it. Normally I don't buy graded unless it is specific coins I am looking for. When I do it is usually PCGS.
I'm curious what the pro/con for you is on modern gold? Would you take one company over the other? Only looking at NGC and PCGS.

In my opinion grading older classic coins is a good thing, modern coins not so much. Grading/slabbing moderns like silver and gold eagles is very popular, some like to collect certain labels. I mostly prefer them raw. I don't have a preference between major graders PCGS, NGC etc. I avoid the little known ones. As the phrase goes buy the coin not the slab.
If you use the search line here on CCF and your browser you'll find conversations about it. Have fun!

Don't waste your time grading modern coins, especially bullion.

I agree with NumismaticsFTW above, to not spend money having raw modern bullion graded, hoping for MS70 or PR70 results. Instead, buy them already graded.
My sense is if you're ok with 69's, you can buy them for very little over spot. If you want 70's they'll cost a bit more, but for many, not a lot more.
FYI, in the current weekly auction at David Lawrence Rare Coins ending this Sunday, for the $50 1 oz. Gold American Eagles and Gold Buffalo's, they have every year available, with no reserve, no Buyers Fee/Premium, and free shipping. They each started at $1, but now are each bid at around spot. Virtually all are MS70, with only a very few at MS69. Whenever "First Strike" labels were made, each of these have them! Full disclosure - my brother-in-law is the consignor of nine of the 57 or so lots.

I phrased that poorly I'm going to buy some already graded coins. Figure I'll pick up the 2008 buffalo set but that isn't coming through my LCS anytime soon. Some other similar type pieces. I prefer them graded just so I have a little more trust when buying online. I'm not sending anything in. I do generally agree with you not a lot of point in graded new stuff.

I tried to p.m. an email to you, but could not succeed. This is NOT one of my brother-in-laws nine lots, but the current bid for this 2008 First Strike PCGS MS70 1 oz. Buffalo is currently only $2026. Here's a hotlink: https://www.davidlawrence.com/auctions/lot/760745

It said that your setting does not allow for emails.
Go to "Tools" near the top of this page, then "Manage Your Profile". Once you log in, the second item asks if you want to allow members to email you.

By the way, virtually all of the other MS70 1 oz. Gold Buffalo's and Eagles are currently bid at around $2,000 or $2,100 or so.

I have heard that it is much more profitable to buy sorted gold coins than silver ones. The overpayment is not that big. If your goal is to save money, then just go to the bank or place an order online, but if you look at it as a savings, I think that a sorted coin will cost more.
