Hello everyone, What would you grade this Trade dollar? Does it seem cleaned? Thanks very much! Edited by Bose357 11/04/2023 2:28 pm

ms62 - the spot above the eagle's wing is distracting.

It doesn't look cleaned to me, but it may get the 'details-stained' designation.

How about if we ask the moderators to merge your two threads on this same coin together. Best to keep all of the discussion in one place.

Wow, thanks for the replies! This coin was certified by ICCS in Canada and was given a grade of EF-40. I'm happy to see that I am not the only one who thinks that's off. Might have to send this coin to PCGS.

PCGS is going to be much tougher on the coin. i'd call it AU55 based on the reverse. not sure PCGS would grade it straight though

I am wondering, why would this coin have an original grade of XF-40 from ICCS? I think that it it because there is worn detail on the cap of Liberty. Other than that, I do not see any other wear in the high points. If I were to send this to PCGS, do you think they would grade it the same? Here's a closer look at the cap:

Agree AU given the closeup, unsure if cleaned.

AU Cleaned. ICCS could have graded it lower because I believe world graders are more conservative than US grading services.

This coin at XF45 would be acceptable. There is no luster showing through on the fields, and the only luster is showing in the protected areas on the reverse. The eagle's wings and breast are showing XF type of wear. I could also see a downgrade because of the large black area above the eagle's wing. The area around the date would also be a concern for a cleaning as there is a difference in color to the left and right of the date.
I would not spend the money on trying to get this common date an upgrade to AU at PCGS as there is not enough upside.

Thanks for the input everyone. I guess in hand, the coin looks different; the staining on the reverse is not as strong.
