I found this one in a roll today. Looks like a common die crack at top of Lincoln's head, but there is also an "eclipse" or change in luster that runs across the top of nose and across the face, and it looks like it left a thin ridge of metal along the transition line as well.

Does anyone have any thoughts as to what was going on with this die?

A Spike Head Die Crack, with maybe a thin layer of grease or something, on the chin and neck?

Yes hard to say why there is a region with differing luster. Could be as-made or due to chemical exposure of some sort.

Agree, outside of the spike head, hard to analyse.

the change in color from your 'eclipse' has an arc that is about the same size cent, or possibly just larger like a nickel or quarter. It could be that this coin was resting partially under another coin where the right side was covered by a penny and protected it from exposure and toning like the left side.
