I've been looking to add a Series 1905 $20 Gold Certificate (a.k.a. the "Technicolor" note) to my collection for years now, figuring it would make a great capstone to my 20th Century U.S. Currency Type Set. But all the ones I could actually afford had really lousy eye appeal and the ones that had even decent eye appeal were well beyond my budget. Short of winning the lottery some day, I was really starting to think that I would never be able to pick one of these up. Well, I finally found an acceptable compromise with a note that has decent eye appeal but was also affordable due to having a "details" grade on account of "minor repairs": As an investment, I suspect the "details" grade pretty much makes it a wash, but the whole investment thing is just the excuse I tell my wife in order to justify spending any money at all on my collection. [Oh, and in case anybody is wondering, I ended up paying around $3500 for this note, including rather hefty MA sales tax.]

Congratulations Barry. An image of an uncirculated example for those reading and wondering how the note got its nickname Technicolor. A simply stunning note before the fading begins.

Yep, and one like that would probably cost at least $40,000 - 50,000. Hence my compromise.

Handsome note for sure, congrats! And a great comparison note, Steve.
