I am not sure what I found. I had not even noticed the missing ridges.
The coin sorter at the bank kept rejecting it...fortunately...I suppose. After I got home, I looked closer and found the smooth edge.
It weighs 11.2 grams
The mint mark is undecipherable, even under magnification. I "think" is a D.
My internet searches don't find much. There is some mumblings of counterfeit halves, but those seem to be silver fakes.
I posted some pics for review

to the forum! It's either an early stage Dryer Coin or has been encased at some point.

elbarto801,

Looks like a D mint mark. My first thought is it was a slot machine coin in a casino. Whatever caused the wear it is not a mint error.

However the reeding came to be missing it's all damage. The coin did not leave the mint that way.

Value is 50 cents - if you can get the coin counting machine to accept it.

Thanks everyone! All that makes sense. The edge is so perfect, I am thinking some crafty person ground/sanded the edge smooth, and had it in some belt buckle or some large jewelry piece. It sure is beat up, apart from the missing edge.

Chances are this is from a casino with the edge smoother over by running it through the slots over and over again.

If it's a slot machine coin from the 1980s, you should be able to smell the secondhand smoke from 20 feet away.
