I may be completely wrong but I was once told that a long time ago individuals used to put their initials in their coins. I have a few large cents which have initials stamped into the coin.

Counterstamps are a post-mint alteration and without a point of reference, can mean almost anything. NDK is probably someone's initials but the only one that truly knows is the creator.

1922 with NDK counterstamped initials? That sounds unique. Maybe you could sell it on ebay with an opening bid of $1000. Someone might bite...

That's because there's nothing "official" about them, and anyone with a letter punch can create them for any reason, usually idle curiosity. It's the equivalent of scratching your initials into a coin.

Actually Gregory Brunk published several books on counterstamped coins right before he auctioned off his collection.
American and Canadian Counterstamped Coins by Gregory G. Brunk
World Countermarks on Medieval and Modern Coins: An Anthology (Gleanings from the Numismatist, V. 8) by Gregory Brunk
A bibliography of numismatic literature on countermarked coins by Gregory G Brunk
and has a newer book out called,
Merchant and Privately Countermarked Coins, Advertising on the World's Smallest Billboards (2004) by Gregory Brunk
which is published by Rich Hartzog. Dr. Brunk is still cataloging counterstamps for future reference works and is considered the leading authority on the subject today. ~ Jim
