*** Edited by Staff to Add Year to Title. It's very important to have in the title. ***

I got this coin in change recently that looks like a Lincoln Cent but is the size of a Nickel.. It's made of metal and appears to be the same thickness as a penny but I don't have a scale so I can't weigh it.

Can not figure out what the heck this is.. is it just some novelty coin? Doesn't seem like it would be worth the time, effort or money making a novelty coin out of metal that's worth one penny...

Any ideas?

Certainly looks like a Texas Cent to me too, Brandmeister.

Oh!! Very cool, Thanks for the info. It makes perfect "cents" because it didn't look like it was mashed because it still had detail but mashing it between pieces of leather wouldn't flatten it out. Though it is sligbtly warped..

I guess the last question would be. WHY?

why would anyone do this to a coin?

Thanks for the replies :)

Well, one possibility is that, since it is now the same size as a 5 cent piece, perhaps a vending machine might accept it as a 5 cent piece. Sure, if the vending machine manufacturer is doing their job properly it won't work (too lightweight) but in the minds of some people, you never know until you try.

It may not seem very logical - and making a Texas Cent probably takes a lot longer than 4 cents worth of labour - but to quote Dr Taylor from Star Trek IV, "Whoever said the human race was logical?"

Entertainment? Curiosity? Boredom? We will never know the motivation I'm afraid, but we see these things posted here multiple times per year.
