@ridge, first welcome to CCF. Second, clad coins which are buried in acidic soil often come out looking like this. With that said, it is a good idea to give us the weight. There is a small chance that it could be missing both clad layers, but then it should be of much weaker design and lower weight compared to mint specs.

Thanks for the reply. I'll weigh it and post that. Is it possible for the press to run out of the clad material and still have the planchet material punched out in just a copper coin. Would the weight still be off? I don't know what the process is so this might be a dumb question

I weighed the coin and it weighs less than my other quarters but not enough to be missing both clad layers thanks for everyone's replies. I have a penny I'm going to post that I could use help identifying the defect
