Hi all...

First time poster here. This is a neat site you have here. I've been referred to post here by SuperDave from a thread I started over at the ArsTechnica forums seeking advice on a few ancients that I found.

I was rummaging through some boxes last week and stumbled across my old coin collection. A lot of it was passed down from my great-grandfather and some other family members. A lot of the collection is turn of the century European and Asian coins, but I ran across some other coins that always intrigued me.

I've done some googling, and have been able to turn up some info on similar ancient coins (particularly, the coins in the lucite block below), but I haven't been able to turn up any info specifically on what I have here.

So, I'm curious if anyone here might be able to shed some light on these? I'd really just like to know what I have and if they might be real. I have no idea of their value, though if it turns out they're worth something, I wouldn't mind knowing so I can do something to properly store them.

A trip to a coin shop would be in order at some point, but I thought I'd see if I could get some basic info on them first.

The first six coins are loose, and the remaining coins are encased in a Lucite (or something similar) block with some labeling indicating Roman origin.

, I'm sorry to say but from what I can tell most these coins except for #2 appear to be modern reproductions. The ones encased most likely came from a museum gift shop. I'll have to check out #2 a little better to be sure.

In my opinion all of these coins are modern "souvenirs".

Thanks very much for the input. I had figured these were likely reproductions, but wanted to try and find out for sure.

Out of curiosity, can any of you refer me to any sites where I can learn more about these particular coins? It's not that I don't believe your assessments of these, but these coins have always interested me because of their uniqueness. I'd love to find out more about where these coins might have come from, and what their genuine counterparts would be like.

Thanks again.

Here are a few sites for you to check out:

http://www.forumancientcoins.com
http://www.coinarchives.com
http://www.wildwinds.com.

Wildwinds was recently attacked by a hacker and a lot of the data has been lost.
