Here's the Balbinus sestertius I recently bought for my emperor set. Photos aren't as good as I'd like but I'm away from my normal setup for the week.

The bumps all over are a little ugly (and worrying) but the portrait is still very nice. Provenance checks out and nothing appears out of the norm on the edge.

30mm
14.27g

Thoughts?

Also is the circular tag or the writing familiar to anyone? I could not identify where it is from and the seller made no mention of it.

You could try contacting coin clubs and shops in the Lansing area and see if anyone remembers any prominent ancient collectors (coins like those listed in the catalog would have been not in the domain of a casual collector, so odds are, someone will know the name.) The tag is dated 1974 so you'd be looking for collectors who were active around that time. Not sure what the letter is after the date - looks like an F.

You could also contact the auctioneers if they're still in business, and ask if they keep logs for provenance of consignments.

Long shots, but better than no shots.

That being said, it's quite lovely, in my opinion, and doesn't look as though it has degraded substantially since 1987, as it largely matches the auction catalog description.

Edit: Joe Lepczyk's son Tim is apparently active on the Internet; he could be contacted and might have further information, perhaps.
Apparently Lepczyk was quite a large dealer and his catalogs have a large number of ancients listed. I found a few of the catalogs online but most of them don't seem to have provenance listed for lots.

Thanks for the ideas paralyse! I'll see if I can find a contact for someone in that area.

I suspect the circular tag is much older than 1974 and that inventory number was just added later. It's in different ink and seems to be from a ballpoint pen instead of the fountain pen(?) "238 Balbinus" was written with.

This coin also went through a Danish auction with the past year or so, though the seller included no documentation from it and that auction does not seem to keep records online. I believe it though since a recent sale from that auction had a few more coins from Lepczyk and George Beach, a dealer out of Michigan from the same time as Lepczyk.
