Guess which one? (Reverses pretty much the same). Ok the answer is the first one got XF-Details (NGC), the second got straight F15 (PCGS), sure seems bass-ackward to me. Both coming up for auction soon, could make a huge difference in value, I sure don't want to get this one wrong.

Personally, I prefer the first one. Both look like they have been in the "environment" for a while

Quote: Also looks like two different varieties? Yes, the first is AMERI., S-1, B-1, the second variety is not listed at GC but regular AMERICA reverse. The first looks so much better to me, much nicer surfaces, but somehow that one got the Details label, I just don't get it. With the AMERI. reverse it will surely go higher than I want to spend, and the F15 coin looks terribly corroded to me, so I guess just a learning exercise.

I have noticed that on old copper the TPG's loosen the grading standards on VF and below. On coins XF and above the grading standards are much the same as other metals.

That is very interesting and matches with what I am seeing out there. Such as this VF20 which also looks more corroded than the XF coin. If ever there were a time for "buy the coin not the holder", it's lower grade Chain Cents.

No competition, top is so much nicer. 1793 cents get their own special treatment, key date bump and early copper slack for corrosion. Copper collecting is the pinnacle for buying the coin and not the holder.
