I picked up this coin for $75 in an online auction and would appreciate your thoughts on grade. This may be VAM-12. If so, it could be a very early example of that variety. These are auction house photos - the coin is currently in transit. Thanks. "Nummi rari mira sunt, si sumptus ferre potes." - Christophorus filius Scotiae

Beautiful coin. But I was wondering what's going on in the neck. At first, I thought it was a stain but a close up it looks like there might be a metal void here. What do you think it is?

Assuming nothing serious on the neck I'm inclined to say MS-66. Luster is booming and there are only the smallest marks with a very clean cheek.

MS-64PL seems like a good bet.

I appreciate the considered replies from the CCF experts. I hope you are right and it is, at least, mid-MS. PL would be a nice extra I am definitely hoping for. Quote: What do you think it is? I had noticed that and am assuming it is a combination of toning/staining and the way the lighting was situated. If you notice, on the reverse, there is a glare and shadow profile in that general sector of the coin.

she's a little weak for an 87. the eagle breast should be much more defined. what appears to be some staining, discoloration or rust on some of the surfaces. looks like she has decent luster. PL designation is difficult using photos without something to show depth of field like newsprint.
I'm with the other MS64 grades. can't call PL

This coin showed up last night. Good news is there is no problem on Liberty's neck, just some very light toning. In fact, the whole coin looks much better in hand with the obverse/reverse dark patches being extremely subtle. My guess is that the lighting the auction house uses accentuates things. I think this will grade out at least MS64 and hope for better. The bad news - this is not VAM-12. Just Pareidolia based on very reflective fields and wanting to see markers that aren't there. I really mean to break out my camera, get the lighting right and post in hand photos of some of the coins I've put on the forum over the past few months. Very little time and space to do that now. In my bachelor days, I had the whole house to work in and now I've gifted most of it to my wife who makes better use of the space. Thank you for your comments. I'll be back to post new stuff as acquired.
